The GOTS label? What is it?

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard. It concerns textile products but of the cotton, wool, hemp and silk category.

It is an international label called organic textiles, created in 2008 by a collaborative working group between Germany (Natural Textile Industry Association), the United Kingdom (Soil Association), the United States (Organic Trade Association) and Japan (Japan Organic Cotton Association).

From the 2000s, the ecological and health problem is growing and many clothing companies (from its transformation from the raw material) begin to cogitate on clothing models using " clean " processes and human values combining small productions and ancestral know-how. It is natural that Luz chose to join this adventure for her swimsuits, bodysuits and beachwear.

The GOTS label in detail.

Label gotsThis designation has two levels of requirement.

For organic textiles, at least 95% of the textile fibres must come from organic farming. For the rest, synthetic and/or artificial is allowed. As for viscose. On the other hand, it is impossible to combine in the base material, organic cotton for example and its cousin not from an organic reasoned culture.

For textiles based on organic textile fibres, 70% to 95% of the fibres will meet the certificate of organic origin or in conversion (i.e. company in the process of ecological transformation proving proven involvement and action in favour of ecological production). The rest of the material can be artificial, synthetic, but cannot exceed 10%. Small difference for socks, tights and jogging, for which 25% non-organic are valid. Here too, the mixing of organic fiber with the same non-organic basic product is prohibited.

With regard to chemicals that are found -too- recurrently in the manufacturing processes of organic or organic textiles, the GOTS label refuses any aromatic solvent, as well as chlorophenol, formaldehyde. No fibre from GMO crops either ; no more than cotton, hemp or wool which has undergone fungicide treatments, staining with heavy metals or fluorocarbons.

For soda, it is allowed only if it is a recycled solvent. For complementary accessories on clothing, plastics can be used unless they belong to PVC ; buttons, straps, staples, like some details of Luz swimsuits.

And the human dimension? At Luz we are strongly attached to it.

The GOTS standard highlights social criteria found in the Convention of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The managers of the textile companies claiming the label, are committed to respecting the rights of employees, refuse forced and/or concealed labour, validate normalised working hours, and absolutely prohibit and condemn the work of minors. Jobs are stabilized, wages decent according to the level of GDP of each country.

This is totally summed up by the identity of Luz Collection :

Swimsuits and bodyswear are articulated in an eco-design world, a modern, avant-garde and committed fashion.

The GOTS label ensures the production of organic cotton (zero pesticides, zero GMOs, zero chemical fertilizers) in order to respect the land producing raw material.

But that's not all, the human dimension takes into account respect under human rights for the value of work and the recognition of those who produce. Trade is therefore fair and the brand's jersey or body models meet all these expectations, both ethical and ecological.

GOTS has since become the recognized international label for natural and organic textiles. It has indeed provided social supplements for employees, while maintaining and improving the principles of organic farming.
